How to set up IndexNow
Tell Bing, Yandex, Naver and Seznam about new and changed pages the moment they change.
IndexNow is the shared, free way to tell search engines "this page changed, come and crawl it". A key file at your site root is all it takes, set up once. ChatGPT search reads the Bing index, so pages reach it sooner.
What opens in seops
- Changed pages reach Bing and Yandex without waiting for the next crawl
- seops sends every day and spreads the queue over time, so you never hit the 429 limit
- Submission history with the response code of every batch
Steps
-
Generate a key
seops generates one for you in the IndexNow step of the setup wizard (Account › Setup); or generate one on Bing's page (32 letters and digits).
-
Put the key file at the site root
Create a file named
KEY.txtat the root containing only the key.https://example.com/KEY.txtmust show the key. On Cloudflare Workers with static assets, drop it in the assets folder; on WordPress, the Bing plugin or any file-upload route works. -
Confirm in seops
On 2 · Health › Indexing › IndexNow, paste the key in the IndexNow card at the bottom of the page and Save. seops fetches the file and shows Key verified.
-
Turn on automatic sending
On the same card turn on Submit changed pages automatically every day and Save. For a backlog, pick a count above the table (50–500 URLs) and choose Submit → Submit the first … queued URLs.
How to use it in seops
- 2 · Health › Indexing › IndexNow: Queue / Changed / Submitted
- Submissions rotate across all your sites; on a 429 seops waits and continues
Questions
429 Too Many Requests
The shared endpoint api.indexnow.org throttles a host after a large burst, sometimes for days. seops submits to www.bing.com/indexnow and yandex.com/indexnow directly and backs off automatically. Don't run a second IndexNow sender for the same site at the same time.
Does Google use IndexNow?
No. Google reads sitemaps and crawls on its own schedule; use 2 · Health › Indexing › Google index and sitemap submission for Google.
